Pickup: Early morning from your hotel in Kathmandu

Afternoon: Walk through Tarkeghyang village, visit the monastery, meet local Hyolmo families, short acclimatisation stroll

Trip Information

Best Time to Trek Ama Yangri

Season What to expect
October–November Clearest skies and best views, cool mornings, cold summit. First choice
December–February Very clear but cold, frost and sometimes snow near the top, warm layers essential
March–April Rhododendron forests in bloom, warmer days, some haze by late morning, start early.
May Warm and hazy, afternoon showers begin
June–September Monsoon: cloud hides the mountains, trails are muddy, road may be cut. Not recommended

Avoid festival mornings and New Year’s Day if you want a quiet summit; hundreds of domestic hikers climb at night to catch first light.

Accommodation and Food

You stay in Tarkeghyang in a simple Himalayan lodge or teahouse with blankets, hot meals, and mountain views. Some lodges have attached bathrooms and hot showers; we book the best available room for your group. Meals are Nepali (dal bhat, noodles, soups, momo) with some international options. Vegetarian and other dietary needs are easy to arrange if you tell us in advance. We recommend filtered or boiled water to reduce plastic waste.

Packing List

  • Warm fleece and windproof jacket (summit is cold and windy)
  • Down jacket in winter and spring mornings
  • Hat, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream
  • Sturdy trekking shoes, plus trekking poles
  • Headlamp with spare batteries (the early start is in the dark)
  • Rain jacket from March to October
  • Personal medicines, blister kit and 2 litres of water capacity
  • Passport copy, insurance policy and cash in rupees

If you do not have a sleeping bag or down jacket, ask us at your briefing about rental in Kathmandu.

Ama Yangri for Families and Beginners

The trek suits active children and first-time trekkers who can walk for 5–6 hours. There is no technical climbing and altitude risk is low. For families, we can slow the pace, add a porter for bags, offer the base-camp jeep option to shorten summit day, or give children a rest at Tarkeghyang while adults go up. Please tell us ages and fitness when you enquire so we can plan the day properly.
